Legend was born John Roger Stephens on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio. He Grew up as one of four kids. At 4 yrs old he performed in a local church choir, which developed his love for music. Legend graduated from high school as salutatorian of his class and went on to the University of Pennsylvania; where he studied English with an emphasis on African-American literature. After graduating in 2001, Legend was introduced by Devo Springsteen (a record producer), to then up-and-coming hip-hop artist Kanye West; where he was hired to sing the hooks of West’s music. He was reluctant to change his stage name to”John Legend”, that was given to him by poet J. Ivy, as he heard his music as “old-school”; the name soon caught on.
He appeared on albums by Fort Minor, Sérgio Mendes, Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, The Black Eyed Peas, Stephen Colbert, Rich Boy, MSTRKRFT, Chemistry, and Fergie, among others. Legend won his first Grammy Award with 2004’s Get Lifted. The album went platinum, due to his hit single “Ordinary People.”
Legend’s philanthropy has extended to 45 charities and 27 causes that include Hurricane Katrina where he spent a day folding laundry at the Tide “clean start” mobile laundromat and visited homes that Tide is helping to rebuild in that community. Legend also campaigned for both Obama terms.
In 2013 Legend married model Chrissy Teigen and on April 14, 2016 (who is now 9 months) had their daughter Luna Simone Stephens. Both Legend and Teigen have been outspoken in their political views, not being shy to criticize our new president.
