The 1993 movie first starts with Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) reporting the weather, as he is a weatherman. Him and a producer as well as cameraman go to cover the annual emergence of the groundhog from its hole on Groundhog Day. We see Connors as an arrogant man that really lacks any decency. After covering the story he gets caught in a blizzard that he didn’t predict and finds himself trapped in a time warp––hence, Groundhog Day. He has to live the same day, February 2nd everyday until he gets it right. He commits suicide multiple times trying every way to get out of living the same day over and over again. After a while, Connors was trying to get used to the situation and suddenly falls in love with his producer Rita (played by Andie MacDowell). We find at the end of the movie that he gets out of the time warp by his love for another.
I would say the strongest performance came from Bill Murray. Besides the fact that he was the main character, he was able to really embody the frustration of his character. He was also able to have the audience have sympathy for him. Andie MacDowell was really great as well and had done a good job in changing emotions. The cameraman Larry (played by Chris Elliot) was okay. I think that his character felt very flat.
The late director Harold Ramis had included himself in the movie as the Neurologist. He has done the screenplay Ghostbusters I and II, which Bill Murray starred in. In addition to being the director, he was also the screenwriter. After making Groundhog Day, Ramis went on to direct Multiplicity (1996), Analyze This (1999), and act in many movies such as As Good As It Gets.
The scenes I really enjoyed were when he was trying to kill himself. I liked the suicide scene where he takes a toaster and puts it in the bathtub; it was hilarious. My other favorite scene was when Larry (the cameraman) was auctioned off for 25 cents to and elderly woman; this was also hilarious. The other scene I really liked was when he stole the groundhog and was on a chase with the police. Collectively I liked all of these scenes because I found them funny.
I really liked the movie and I would give it an 8/10.
